To the Most Important Question You Could Ever Ask

When taking a test in school, wehat was your preferred type of question – Fill-in-the-Blank, Essay, True-or-False, or Multiple-Choice questions? Did you know that God gives a multiple choice question for the sinner?

This test is revealing, as all tests are. The question is simple. There is only one. The answer comes straight from the Bible, God’s Holy Word. Your choice wil either lead to a life of continued frustration and send you to eternal damnation in Hell or it will lead you to abundant life now and eternal life forever.

Are you ready to take this simple, one-question test? Your thoughtfulness and participation are vital. Here’s the question: How can I solve my sin problem? That is the question – nothing more. Now what is meant by a solution to my sin problem? Solution means forgiveness of all your sins, past, present, and future. It also means deliverance from the current power of sin over your life. Lastly, it means rescue from the final consequence of your sin, that is Hell. So, here’s the question again. How can I solve my sin problem? Please consider the multiple-choice answer to this most important question.

Paul the apostle, formerly Saul of Tarsus, once a powerful force and leader among the Jews, spoke of his burden for his people. “Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved” (Romans 10:1). In other words, he wanted them to discover how their sin problem could be solved. Then he noted their “zeal of God” that is “not according to knowledge” (Romans 10:2). Neither zeal nor sincerity equal accuracy, and considering eternity, one cannot afford to be wrong. Then Paul gives four possible answers to the question at hand. Which of these answers is the right one?

A. Follow a set of man-made rules, independent of God’s rules.

“For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God” (Romans 10:3). Here the Word of God notes that those mentioned in the context, are following a set of man-made rules, completely independent of God’s Rules. This first option is the most popular. It comes in all shapes and sizes. It has created and sustains most religions and denominations that exist today. Choosing it may make you a decent person. It may make you an acceptable member of society or a particular culture. It may cause you to have some measure of success among the rest of those who are following the same rules. Yet some questions remain. If you choose this answer and act upon it, will it get your name permanently sealed in the Book of Life? Will it give you forgiveness of all your sins? Will it take you to Heaven when you die? Are you absolutely certain of your answer?

This first option lacks sense, because the “rules” being followed are based upon the opinion of men. Further, they differ from God’s rules and way of salvation as shown in the Bible. Worst of all, when compared with God’s standard of judgment, they prove wholly inadequate. What if a batter tried to play baseball this way? Let’s say he stepped to the plate and caught the pitch instead of hitting the ball? Then, instead of running around the bases, he ran across the pitcher’s mound and slid into second base. Then, standing up, he brushed off the dirt, smiled at the umpire, and bragged to the second baseman about avoiding getting tagged. What would happen to him? They’d kick him off the field and send him to the dugout! The coach may even dismiss him to the clubhouse. What if, along the way, he boasted about catching a 90 mile-an-hour fastball? His escorts would respond by saying, “What’s wrong with you? That’s not the way you play baseball!!!” To this he replied with a strange certainty, “It is where I come from!!” At this point, you can conclude he is either crazy or following a completely different set of rules. Respectfully, there is not a bit of difference between this scenario and the first option. It is completely ridiculous!

B. Keep God’s Law perfectly from birth to death.

“For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doth those things shall live by them” (Romans 10:5). This second option is much more difficult, yet it is certainly made available as a choice. It was already given a few chapters earlier. The Bible states that the Lord “will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life” (Romans 2:6-7).

In other words, anyone who wants to have eternal life can, if they will keep God’s law perfectly from birth to death, without ever breaking one. Just verses later the Lord promises “glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first and also to the Gentile: for there is no respect of persons with God” (Romans 2:9-10). So, anyone, anywhere who keeps God’s Law perfectly from birth to death, without ever breaking it, can go to Heaven.

How well are you keeping God’s Ten Commandments? Did you know they represent less than 2% of His entire law? Are you aware there are over 600 commandments? Have you ever broken one of the Ten Commandments? “Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all” (James 1:10). If you protest, “It’s not even possible to even keep the Ten Commandments, much less the rest,” you are correct. Thus, the second option is completely impossible.

C. Die, go to Hell, burn forever, and pay for your own sin.

“Unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness,” the Lord promises “indignation and wrath” (Romans 2:8). Those who reject the first two options and embrace option theree, experience the following: “Tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first and also of the Gentile” (Romans 2:9). While the Lord did not make Hell for you and me, and while He did prepare it “for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41),  He cannot let sin into Heaven. If He did, Heaven would cease being Heaven, and God would cease being God. So, to enter Heaven, your sin must be solved His way.

Truly, if you are going to pay for your own sin, this is the only way it can be done. You must die, go to Hell, and burn forever to pay for your own sin. This is found throughout the Word of God. “The wicked shall be turned into hell and all the nations that forget God” (Psalm 9:17). “The soul that sinneth, it shall die” (Ezekiel 18:4). “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). “Whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15). What a shock when those who’ve been taught and thought the first option solved their sin problem discover, upon death, that dying is the only way any man can actually pay for his sin! By then it will be too late! This third option is completely unnecessary! “Why,” you ask? Consider the final option.

D. Call upon the Lord Jesus Christ in faith to save your soul and solve your sin problem!

“Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth” (Romans 10:4). “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10). This option is the one guaranteeing salvation and the only possible solution to your sin problem. You can be saved from your sin and have salvation if you trust alone in the One who bled and died for you upon the cross, Jesus Christ. Your sin problem will be solved if you will believe that His payment on the cross is enough, and that He rose again from the grave to give you eternal life!

In other words, you must receive Jesus Christ by a single decision of repentance and faith. To repent is to change your way of thinking about your sin, your destiny, who Jesus is, and the “way of salvation” you’ve been trusting. To believe is to depend only on Christ’s work on the cross and resurrection. According to God’s Word, the moment someone does this, their sin problem is solved.

So which answer will you choose on this simple, one-question, multiple-choice test? Option A, B, C, or D? Will you continue, in vain, to follow a man-made set of rules? Will you try keeping God’s Law perfectly, though you have already broken it thousands of times? Will you someday die, go to hell, burn forever and pay for your own sin, though the payment has already been made? Or will you choose the sensible answer, the Scriptural answer, the only right answer, and call upon the name of Jesus Christ today? “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

Right here, right now, won’t you let Jesus solve your sin problem? If you will simply call out to Jesus Christ to save you, He will! You can pray something like this: “Lord Jesus, I know my sin problem needs to be solved. I can see how futile it is to try solving it myself through man’s empty religion or through keeping the laws I’ve already broken. I realize that if I die to pay for my sin and go to Hell, there will be no escape! Yet I know you shed your blood, died, and rose again to pay for my sin and solve my sin problem! Right now, I believe in you alone as my Lord and Savior, and I receive your gift of eternal life by faith! Come into my heart, solve my sin problem, and save me, Jesus! Thank you!”
